Throughout my education as a communication studies major I have been able to expand my knowledge about topics I am driven to pursue a career in communication because the range of careers are endless. I have had the opportunity to learn how to improve a business’ communication as well as learn about my daily interactions with others. I chose this major because I was seeking a career in journalism, but after exploring so many new courses available to me I was unsure that was the direction I wished to continue towards. While I do not know for certain what career I wish to pursue in this profession I am sure that I am in the right area of study.
Since I began my bachelors’ program at Kutztown University, I had the opportunity to take a variety of classes where each course prepared me for the next. The courses required for my major have shaped my focus towards the concentration I am attracted to. Social media theory and strategy has gone from just a minor to a major at the university as the digital media transforms society and alters the idea of social media as just a way to spend free time. It is fascinating to me that these platforms can be broken down and studied in order to improve a company’s sales, website views, and interactions with customers online.
I currently am a communication studies major with minors in social media theory and public relations. I first added a public relations major because I was interested in the classes that were intended for the major. I also found the introduction class interesting as it included real public relations cases in the real world with large corporations, such as the Exxon and BP oil spill scandals. Social media is not going anywhere therefore I found it imperative that I am educated in the field to grow an understanding of how communication online can be understood.
As I move from a student into a professional setting I will have the chance to adapt what I have learned from my professors to the workplace. This is a wonderful chance to put my studies to work while gaining experience and learn from others.
