Publications for Communication Studies

Throughout the field of communication there is a large collection of trade publications about different subjects. Wisegeek.com defines a trade publication as a trade journal, “targeted to people in a very specific industry.” While exploring various publications across the field of communications a journal caught my attention because of its content about evolving technology. Wired.com focuses on internet and technology, the publication specifically targeting how technological changes create innovating ideas and new connections across various industries. While they discuss industries like science, culture, and business. They use light humor to inform the public on technology changes as it becomes more sophisticated. My favorite article was under the culture tab found on the site, the article speaks of actor Seth Rogen planning a movie about a killer meme. A meme is a viral trend often found on the internet and used in text messages to spread or communicate a message. Rogen’s production company is said to be using a popular meme in the upcoming film.

Another organization that works with Wired to produce quality, accurate content is Deloitte Digital. This organization is a branch organization of Deloitte, a global organization that provides services like financial, tax, and risk advisory. They have over 312,000 employees spread over 150 countries. This organization also supports the same concept of writing about technology changes through time and how it may alter the future. As I navigated their website, I found it uses enticing phrases to lure the reader to click on the article. The actual titles are revealed once the article has been clicked on. I thought this was an interesting tactic, but not misleading at all because the phrase on the home page showcasing the article does not misinform about the actual information in the article. An article I found particularly interesting was about the “post digital” twenties. The article goes on to compare augmented reality and virtual reality while discussing how to thrive in the next decade. I liked that the organization was discussing the future and how technology may change the way we communicate even more than currently.
