This past week I attended two events hosted by the Kutztown University Career and Development Center. They were both very interesting while being very informative about what employers are looking for in potential hires. I first attended a lecture regarding how to build my own personal brand. According to Wikipedia, a personal brand is the practice of marketing someone and their professional career as a brand. I learned a lot of great information regarding how I can make myself stand out and more marketable as an employee. The most surprising part of the lecture was when she instructed us to Google search our own name. I have learned about employers looking at social media, but I never took it seriously before seeing myself online.
The next event I attended was a workshop on creating and updating a LinkedIn profile. I was looking forward to learning how to navigate the network and enhance my profile in order for recruiters to see the best side of me. I was excited to learn how to use the location service on the app to find nearby connections and how to edit my profile. Thanks to the workshop I have a few of my courses and certificates listed on my profile!
After attending these events and reading the guidelines for the Informational Interviewing assignment I am looking forward to getting in touch with a professional in the field! I was not looking forward to the assignment until I thought about the professionals I could interview. I plan on interviewing someone who has been using social media to sell sports graphics since he was bedridden in high school for an illness. He has appeared on FOX, ESPN, and invited to attend the Grammy’s. I look forward to getting insight on what it is like to use social media to run a business.
